Mutato Muzika Studio ‘A’ Rennovation

Mark Mothersbaugh, Devo frontman and acclaimed composer for film, television, and video games, entrusted Sunset Audio Solutions with the renovation of Studio A at his Mutato Muzika Facility. Our scope included enhancing the current room’s aesthetics, acoustics, and technical infrastructure.

Adhering to Mothersbaugh's vision, we implemented a clean, monochromatic look using a custom fabric track system with Knoll Mesa Zinc fabric. The metallic grey finish resembles a tailored suit, creating a sleek, professional atmosphere that fosters creativity. Built-in upholstered couches were integrated into the rear wall, furthering the minimalist design with functionality and style.

Among the many improvements to optimize sound quality, we engineered a horizontal slatted diffuser system hidden behind the rear fabric wall. Multiple layers of varying weight insulation provide deep bass absorption, while wood slats in front of the trapping provide top-end reflection to help counteract treble loss typically associated with fabric-surfaced rooms. The final result is a balanced and high-resolution listening environment.

Collaborating closely with Mark's chief technician, Seth Horan, we upgraded the low-voltage wiring, streamlined the studio workflow, and ensured seamless integration of new and existing systems, allowing for efficient and intuitive operation of the studio's equipment.

The contracting work was expertly led by Joe Griffith, ensuring high-quality execution of the renovation plans. Sunset Audio Solutions took charge of the acoustics, studio design, fabric work, integration, and project management, bringing our expertise to every detail of the studio's transformation.

This renovation successfully merged Mothersbaugh's artistic vision with world-class studio design, creating an inspiring space for music production and composition. The result is a facility that reflects both his creative spirit and the innovative legacy of Mutato Muzika.
